VitalStim® Therapy in Oman — Swallowing Rehabilitation at SQHC
VitalStim is a non-invasive neuromuscular electrical-stimulation approach used by a trained clinician as an adjunct to active swallowing therapy. It is not a stand-alone treatment and it is not suitable for every patient; the first step is a specialist swallowing assessment.
What VitalStim is — and is not
- Surface electrodes are placed on selected areas of the neck by the treating clinician.
- Neuromuscular electrical stimulation is paired with active, task-specific swallowing exercises.
- Some systems may use surface EMG biofeedback to help the patient see and practise muscle activity.
- It does not replace clinical assessment, medical management or conventional swallowing therapy.
Who may be assessed
A speech-language therapist may assess people with oropharyngeal dysphagia after stroke or brain injury, with neurological conditions, after head-and-neck treatment, or with other swallowing difficulties. Suitability depends on the cause, swallowing physiology, medical history, cognition, skin condition and ability to participate. Extra caution is required for children, and evidence is still developing.
Before treatment begins
- Clinical swallowing assessment and review of medical history, current diet and safety concerns.
- Referral for an instrumental swallow assessment such as VFSS or FEES may be recommended when it is needed to understand the problem safely.
- The clinician screens the device instructions, contraindications and precautions for the individual patient.
- Goals, session plan and home practice are personalised; no fixed number of sessions or result can be guaranteed.
Signs that deserve a swallowing assessment
- Coughing or throat-clearing during or after food and drink.
- A wet or gurgly voice, food feeling stuck, or needing unusually long to finish meals.
- Repeated chest infections, unexplained weight loss, dehydration or avoiding foods because swallowing feels unsafe.
- Choking with difficulty breathing is an emergency — seek urgent medical help rather than booking routine therapy.
Frequently asked questions
Is VitalStim the same as a swallowing exercise?
No. The stimulation is used alongside active swallowing exercises selected by the therapist; it is an adjunct, not a replacement for therapy.
Does everyone with swallowing difficulty qualify?
No. The therapist must first identify the swallowing problem and screen medical history, precautions and the patient's ability to participate.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no responsible fixed answer before assessment. Frequency and duration depend on the diagnosis, goals, response and the wider rehabilitation plan.
Can VitalStim guarantee normal swallowing?
No. Outcomes vary, and published evidence is mixed across conditions and protocols. SQHC will explain realistic goals and measure progress for the individual patient.
